Catchwords faintly inscribed in the script of the text in the inner corners of ff. 53v, 66v, 87v. 18 long lines; no ruling visible up to f. 112v; thereafter ruled in pale red ink. Written by 2 people, both using a bâtarde script: i, ff. 1-112; ii, ff. 114-284v. Ten full page illuminations on inserted singletons, blank on the rectos, in semi-grisaille in a style derived from Vrelant; the first three in rectangular frames of a gold and color strip with borders of dark grey, painted gold and blue acanthus leaves, flowers and berries, and scattered black dots and small gold balls; the seven remaining illuminations, for the Psalter, are in arched compartments, serrated at the top, and framed by a narrow gold strip; outer border of the same style as above. The miniatures, somewhat worn and flaked off, are: f. 17v (Penitential psalms), Last Judgment with Christ sitting on a rainbow, 2 angels with trumpets in the sky, and Mary and John kneeling below, while the dead rise from their graves; (illumination missing for the Office of the Dead? or now misbound before the Penitential psalms?); f. 56v (Commendation of souls), angels carrying a sheet with 3 small naked souls to God the Father, who blesses from an aperture in the sky; (no illumination before the Psalms of the Passion); f. 103v (Ave mundi spes), the Virgin standing on a crescent and holding the Child, with 4 adoring angels around them; f. 113v (Psalter, Beatus vir), David in prayer, his harp lying on the ground; an armorial shield painted silver in the lower border; f. 137v (Dominus illuminatio mea), David pointing to his eyes; f. 154v (Dixi custodiam, vias meas), David kneeling on a path with a road behind him; f. 171v (Dixit insipiens in corde suo), David on his throne with the fool before him; f. 188v (Salvum me fac), David, his hands folded in prayer, waist-deep in water; f. 210v (Exultate deo adiutori nostro), David playing the bells; f. 230v (Cantate domino canticum novum), a group of priests singing before a lectern in a church. Historiated initials in white-patterned grey on cusped gold grounds with full borders, as above: f. 85 (O bone ihesu), 6-line, the baby Jesus sitting naked on a cushion between Catherine and Barbara; f. 88v, 6-line, Christopher fording the river; f. 90, 4-line, Barbara standing beside her tower, which is of her same height; f. 96, 6-line, John the Baptist; f. 97, 6-line, martyrdom of Thomas of Canterbury; f. 98, 5-line, Erasmus with his entrails being wound out of him; f. 99v, 5-line, John the Evangelist with the snaky chalice; f. 100 (Salve sancta facies), 5-line, the Holy Face. Major initials, 6- and 5-line, in white-patterned grey on gold grounds with grey and white trilobe leaf infilling; secondary initials, 2- and 1-line, and line fillers up to f. 112 in burnished gold on blue grounds with pink infilling, or vice versa; after f. 112 (the Psalter), secondary initials in gold on black grounds. Rubrics, only up to f. 112, in orange-tinged red. Bound by Gruel in red morocco, the doublures inlaid with the covers of an eighteenth century armorial calf binding (see below). Written in Flanders, dated 1478 on f. 284v, and perhaps meant for export to England, given the English saints in the calendar; the office of the dead may also have been intended to follow the Sarum liturgical use. On f. 1, the signature “Pedro micault” and a prayer; on ff. 1-5, birth and death notices in Flemish of the Micault family, 1581-1600; places mentioned are Brussels, Mechelen (Malines) and Bruges. On the back flyleaves, ff. 286-288, birth and death notices in French of the Micault family, 1510-1606; places mentioned are Brussels, Utrecht, Rome, Valladolid. Added in a space in the calendar, f. 5, s. XVIII, “Ad numeros libris Christiani Geller Parochi in Lebach” (in the Saarland). Arms, s. XVIII2, of “Joannes D[ei] G[ratia] S[acri] R[omani] I[mperii] Princeps Salm Kyrburg Comes Rheni et Sylv.” (Rietstap, vol. 5, pl. 233), whose lands were in Westphalia, from the covers of a previous binding, now as pastedowns. Belonged to William K. Bixby (1857-1931) of St. Louis; his bookplate on f. i verso; acquired by Henry E. Huntington through G. D. Smith in August 1918. Bibliography: De Ricci, 104.
