Description: - ff. ii + 186 - 16th-17th centuries. Three original chain-stitched supports, the thread laced into square-edged, flush, wooden boards grooved on the edges. The beaded, colored endbands are sewn on cords which are attached in holes in the edges of the boards. The edges are painted with a red and black interlace design, the spine smooth and round. Covered in brown goatskin, blind-tooled with concentric borders, different on each board, the central panels filled with flowers and small diamonds. One pin hole in the edge of the upper board, three holes for a strap in the lower. Rebacked. According to A. R. A. Description: - ff. ii + 218 - 15th-16th centuries. Two chain-stitched supports, the thread laced into flush wooden boards without a visible edge groove. The endband cores are tied with three groups of thread which straddle the boards, the endbands embroidered in a beaded herringbone pattern. There are loops of thread around the edges of the quires at head and tail. The spine is smooth and round with a lining extending over about one quarter of the board. Covered in very dark brown goatskin, blind-tooled with two concentric line borders joined at the corners. The fore-edge turn-ins are cut in a notched pattern. Two pin holes in the edge of the upper board, two leather straps with two ends each laced through the lower. Straps wanting except ends inside boards. - Collection of Sir Thomas Phillipps (no. 4289). Description: - ff. i + 170 + i - Date? Pastedowns sewn with bookblock. Three chain-stitched supports. Endbands attached to the square-edged, flush wooden boards. Loops of thread around the edges of the quires at head and tail. The spine is square and lined all along with vellum extending onto the inside of the boards and there seem to be lining strips extending on the outside of the boards also. Two pin holes with stubs of iron pins in them in the edges of the upper board and two holes for each strap on the lower. Rebacked. Covered with 13th-century Greek manuscript fragment containing musical notation, with front flyleaf from the same manuscript, and back flyleaf from a 12th century Greek liturgical text (all badly rubbed). - Acquired by Sir Thomas Phillipps (no. 15867). Description: - ff. ii + 40 - Fifteenth century. Probably Tuscan according to A. R. A. Hobson. One set of sewing holes only. Sewn on four tawed, slit straps laced through tunnels in beech boards and nailed. The endband cores, now wanting, were also nailed. Covered in brown calf, originally a brick red, with corner tongues. Hobson); original sewing, presumably a chain stitch, on three supports laced into square-edged, flush wooden boards without edge grooves but with blind-tooled lines along the edges. The plain, wound endbands are covered with a bright yellow, beaded, secondary embroidery (traces only). Covered in dark brown calf, blind-tooled with concentric borders, different on each board, and three diamonds and flowers in the center panel. Two pins in the edge of the upper board and two sets of three holes for fastening straps on the lower. - Collection of Sir Thomas Phillipps (no. 9516). Description: - ff. 96 - Probably ca. 1530. Bruges (?). Sewn on four single, tawed thongs laced twice in and out of pasteboards. The tawed cores of the beaded endbands are also laced twice. Half bands divide the end sections of the spine. The book-block is remarkably clean and the leaves flat. Covered in brown calf with panel stamps of Saint John the Baptist and Saint Michael in arches with a line of dancing figures and a piper in between. Description: - ff. i + 117 + i - 15th-16th centuries. From the Cretan "Apostolis Shop", according to A. R. A. Hobson. Resewn on three single vegetable fiber cords laced at an angle in and out of flush, oak boards grooved on the square edges. There are several unused lacing holes and traces of two previous linings on the inside of the boards. Covered in calfskin, originally brick red, faintly blind-tooled with concentric borders, the central panel filled with three lozenge-shaped tools, the center one containing a fleur-de-lis. There is a pin in the edge of the upper board and three holes for braids in the lower one. Rebacked. - Bought by Sir Thomas Phillipps (no. 22408) in a Sotheby sale, May 1870. Purchased from L. C. The endbands are plain wound with a secondary embroidery. The spine is round and lined with coarse cloth extending onto the inside of the boards; the edges are slightly gauffered. Covered in dark brown goatskin, blind-tooled with concentric borders, a foliate diamond and corner pieces with six-petalled flowers and acorns in the central panel.
