10. New Haven, CT, Yale University, Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library, Beinecke MS 187
Description: - ff. 193 - Sixteenth century. Resewn with heavy thread (fine cord?), three sewn-in chains linking the quires. Two strands of sewing cord cross over to the horizontal bars of a Z lacing, the diagonals of the lacing visible through the pastedowns of the inside of the flush wooden boards, the horizontal lacing protruding under the leather of the cover. The edges of the boards are concave at head and tail. The smooth, round spine is lined with a coarse, blue-green cloth extending almost to the center of the boards on the outside. The endbands which straddle the boards are laced through them. Covered in dark red, now brown, calf faintly blind-tooled with diamonds with crosses in circles at the intersections. A strap-and-pin fastening, the pin in the edge of the upper board, two holes for the strap in the lower. Sewing slightly repaired, some leather on the spine replaced. Front cover is lined with a parchment leaf from a 15th-century Greek liturgical manuscript. - Belonged to Prof. Thomas Day Seymour of Yale ca. 1899. Bequeathed to his daughter, Elizabeth Day Seymour Angel in 1907, in whose memory it was presented to Yale in 1952 by her husband, John Angel. - Shailor, B. 11. New Haven, CT, Yale University, Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library, Beinecke MS 206
Description: - ff. 450 - Date? Resewn on four single, round, vegetable fiber cords which are frayed out and adhered inside the oak boards. There are no endbands, but traces of alum tawed endband cores and sewing supports remain in the holes in the boards. The spine is square. Some lettering in ink on the fore-edge. Covered in red-brown calf, with an exceptionally large stamp of the Virgin and child in an aureole within concentric frames, one with an inscription, on the upper board and diamonds filled with crosses, roses and IHS in circles on the lower. The latter ornaments are also stamped on the turn-ins underneath the pastedowns. Rebacked and edges repaired. Upper board detached. Not the original and possibly not an early binding. Rebacked in the Yale Conservation Studio in 1982. The upper and lower covers are lined with single leaves, pasted down, of a missale plenum (11th century?). Portions of Dominica VI post Pentecosten, Feria IV of that week (upper cover), an unidentified mass of the Sanctorale, Dominica III post Pentecosten (lower cover). Where they occur, the texts of the proper chants are notated in German neumes in campo aperto. Some of the chants are cited by incipit; these are usually not noted. The Alleluia for DMC III is Domine in virtute; that for DMC VI is Eripe me. (We thank K. D. Hartzell for his assistance with these fragments.) - Gift of Mrs. Bernard F. Gimbel in 1955. - Shailor, B. Catalogue of Medieval and Renaissance Manuscripts in the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, MS 206.

14. New Haven, CT, Yale University, Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library, Beinecke MS 211
Description: - ff. 125 - 16th-17th centuries. Resewn with three strands of thread on four round, twisted, vegetable fiber cords laid in forked grooves and laced in and out of flush oak boards. The cords are pegged twice: from outside to inside and vice versa with almost square pegs. The vegetable fiber endband cores are laced into the boards, the endbands themselves wanting. The spine is rounded, with traces of adhesive. Covered in tawed skin, once white, now tan and white. The turn-ins are sometimes turned in over small fragments of a parchment manuscript, in other cases, under, and the corners cut square. There is some inscribed parchment on the outside of the upper board, probably part of a spine lining. The discoloration on the endleaves does not match the present turn-ins. There are traces of four round bosses on each board and of a pin in the center of the upper one. The white, tawed strap, most of which is now wanting, is attached to the lower board through a metal plate. One corner of the upper board is cut away and the covering of the spine and part of the boards wanting. A messy, somewhat primitive binding. - Collection of Sir Thomas Phillipps (no. 485). Acquired by Yale in 1955 from V. G. Simkhovitch. - Shailor, B. Catalogue of Medieval and Renaissance Manuscripts in the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, MS 211.
