Description: - ff. iii + 318 + i - Sixteenth century. Wound sewing on three round, vegetable fiber cords laced into beech boards and frayed out on the inside of them. Beaded, colored endbands are sewn on what is probably the spine lining but are not tied down through the quires. The spine is square, with a coarse, hand-woven cloth lining extending on the inside across more than one third of the boards. Covered in dark, red-brown goatskin with the turn-ins pasted over the paste-downs. A central medallion of the crucifixion very heavily impressed in the center of the upper board within concentric borders, all blind-tooled. A barely visible different design using the same border tool on the lower board. Two strap and pin fastenings, the pins in the edge of the upper board, the triple strands of the clasps laced through the lower board to the inside of the pastedown. One strand broken. - Acquired by Stonehill's in 1936. Purchased 18 January 1937 as a gift of the Yale Library Associates. - Shailor, B. Description: - ff. 193 - Sixteenth century. Resewn with heavy thread (fine cord?), three sewn-in chains linking the quires. Two strands of sewing cord cross over to the horizontal bars of a Z lacing, the diagonals of the lacing visible through the pastedowns of the inside of the flush wooden boards, the horizontal lacing protruding under the leather of the cover. The edges of the boards are concave at head and tail. The smooth, round spine is lined with a coarse, blue-green cloth extending almost to the center of the boards on the outside. The endbands which straddle the boards are laced through them. Covered in dark red, now brown, calf faintly blind-tooled with diamonds with crosses in circles at the intersections. A strap-and-pin fastening, the pin in the edge of the upper board, two holes for the strap in the lower. Sewing slightly repaired, some leather on the spine replaced. Front cover is lined with a parchment leaf from a 15th-century Greek liturgical manuscript. - Belonged to Prof. Thomas Day Seymour of Yale ca. 1899. Bequeathed to his daughter, Elizabeth Day Seymour Angel in 1907, in whose memory it was presented to Yale in 1952 by her husband, John Angel. - Shailor, B. Description: - ff. i + ii + 133 + 90 + 5 + ii + i - 16th-17th centuries. Four chain-stitched supports link the quires and are laced into square-edged, flush, wooden boards with grooved edges. Colored, beaded endbands are sewn on fine cords attached to the boards. There are two twisted thread placemarks attached to the headband. The edges are bright yellow; the spine round and smooth with a spine lining extending across about one third of the outside of the wooden boards. Covered in dark brown goatskin, blind-tooled with an x surrounded with diamond-shaped tools stamped at random, within an outer border. One board is mended and both have small lumps in corners and center where bosses would normally be, underneath the present cover. There are traces of plaster where the leather is worn through over the lumps. There are two pins in the edge of the upper board, three corresponding holes going through both board and pastedown in the lower. Straps wanting. Description: - ff. ii + 218 - 15th-16th centuries. Two chain-stitched supports, the thread laced into flush wooden boards without a visible edge groove. The endband cores are tied with three groups of thread which straddle the boards, the endbands embroidered in a beaded herringbone pattern. There are loops of thread around the edges of the quires at head and tail. The spine is smooth and round with a lining extending over about one quarter of the board. Covered in very dark brown goatskin, blind-tooled with two concentric line borders joined at the corners. The fore-edge turn-ins are cut in a notched pattern. Two pin holes in the edge of the upper board, two leather straps with two ends each laced through the lower. Straps wanting except ends inside boards. - Collection of Sir Thomas Phillipps (no. 4289). Description: - ff. i + 188 + i - Date? Original sewing on three chain supports laced in a Z pattern into square, flush wooden boards, grooved on the edges. Two pin holes in the edge of the upper board and three holes for each strap in the lower. Traces of rectangular plates (?) at the fore-edge near the head of the upper board and the tail of the lower. Description: - ff. ix + 555 + xi - 16th-17th centuries. Greek, perhaps from Ionian Islands, according to A. R. A. Hobson. Resewn with four chains laced in a Z pattern into square-edged, flush wooden boards. The colored, chevron endbands straddle the boards and are tied into them in three holes at head and tail of each board. The spine is round. Covered in dark brown calf, originally brick red, with corner tongues, and (an unusual feature) pegged turn-ins; blind-tooled with concentric borders, the central panel filled in with rope interlace squares standing on a point, and the spine decorated with small flowers. Two pins in the edge of the upper board and stubs of triple braids in the lower. Head and tail of the spine repaired. - Purchased from L. C. Description: - ff. 258 - 16th-17th centuries. Sewn on four vegetable fiber cords or with four chains laced into horizontal grooves on the outside of wooden boards which have deep edge grooves forking at the corners. The cords or chains are visible on the round spine which is lined with cloth which extends over about half of the outside of the boards. The headbands are Western. Covered in dark red goatskin, now brown, with corner tongues. Remains of two leather fastenings, probably braids, laced through two pairs of holes in the lower board, holes for the pins in the edge of the upper one. Triple blind-tooled fillets form an intersecting pattern more or less the same on both boards and the spine. - Purchased from Lathrop C. Harper, Inc., by Thomas E. Description: - ff. iv + 106 + i - 17th-18th centuries. Sewn on three tawed, kermes pink, slit strap supports with holes, possibly for fastening them while sewing, visible on the upper side. The endbands are sewn on twisted leather cores extending about 18 mm. inside the cover, the supports and endband cores laced into a vellum case. Four tawed fastening ribbons, mostly wanting. Endband cores broken and lower side badly rodent-eaten. On cover, large capitals in brown ink: "Rectorica [corrected to Rhetorica] Aristotelis Graeca.". - Purchased from L. C. Witten in 1965 by Edwin J. Beinecke and Frederick W. Beinecke, for the Beinecke Library. - Shailor, B.
