Description: - ff. 36 - Fifteenth century. Sewn on two tawed, slit straps laid in a channel and nailed in square, flush wooden boards. The spine is square. Covered in reddish brown leather with corner turn-in tongues. Decorated with a blind-tooled panel of interlaced rope work and green dots in circles inside concentric borders. A catch on the lower board and a cloth strap (velvet?) attached to the upper with star-headed nails. Description: - ff. iii + 318 + i - Sixteenth century. Wound sewing on three round, vegetable fiber cords laced into beech boards and frayed out on the inside of them. Beaded, colored endbands are sewn on what is probably the spine lining but are not tied down through the quires. The spine is square, with a coarse, hand-woven cloth lining extending on the inside across more than one third of the boards. Covered in dark, red-brown goatskin with the turn-ins pasted over the paste-downs. A central medallion of the crucifixion very heavily impressed in the center of the upper board within concentric borders, all blind-tooled. A barely visible different design using the same border tool on the lower board. Two strap and pin fastenings, the pins in the edge of the upper board, the triple strands of the clasps laced through the lower board to the inside of the pastedown. One strand broken. - Acquired by Stonehill's in 1936. Purchased 18 January 1937 as a gift of the Yale Library Associates. - Shailor, B. Description: - ff. iii + 272 + ii - Sixteenth century. Original sewing on three double, tawed supports laced into the wooden boards. The spine is heavily rounded, with the sewing supports well defined by blind-tooled lines. Covered in dark brown calf with a panel of the Annunciation, in a border of birds, animals and flowers blind-stamped on each board inside outer frames of lines. There is a brass catch on the upper board and a long, thin brass clasp on a leather strap attached to the lower with a brass plate. The leather is slightly torn at the head of the spine but otherwise the book is in fine condition, with no trace of sophistication. Front and back pastedowns from a 15th-century Latin liturgical manuscript. - Purchased from Stonehill's in 1942. - Shailor, B.
